Privacy Policy

Last updated September 27, 2026. This covers the GemSpot website (gemspot.ca) and the GemSpot iOS app.

What you share publicly

Gems you drop (title, note, photo and the spot on the map), your username, avatar and bio, and your rankings, posts, comments and likes. If you make your account private, your rankings and posts are shown only to followers you approve.

What we keep to run your account

Location

When you use the map, your location is used to show what's nearby; the area you're looking at is sent with each search, but we don't store your location history.

Trips record your route with GPS, including in the background in the iOS app while a trip is running. A trip's route, laps, notes and photos stay on your device. They leave it only if you choose to: turning on Back up to your account stores them privately on our servers (visible only to you), and Fill gaps sends the two ends of each gap to a public routing service to find the likely path. Ranking a place from a trip posts that place like any other ranking.

Service providers

We use a small number of service providers to run GemSpot: hosting, database and photo storage; a bot check on sign-up; place search; automated screening of public posts and photos for harmful content; account email delivery; and map tiles and routing. They process your data only to provide these services to us.

We don't sell your data, show ads, or use third-party analytics or tracking.

Deleting your data

Delete your account any time in Me → Settings → Delete account. That permanently removes your profile, rankings, saves, follows, comments, notifications and backed-up trips and their photos. Gems you dropped stay on the map without your name. Trips that were never backed up live only on your device; deleting a trip or the app removes them.

Children

GemSpot isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
